Colman says humor made the scenes less awkward, especially when the bed broke during filming

Alexander SkarsgÄrd and Olivia Colman wasted no time before filming their wild sex scenes in Wicker.
The Pillion actor, 50, tells PEOPLE in a recent interview that he and Colman, 52, got right into shooting their steamy scenes on the second or third day of filming their romantic fantasy movie, which stars Colman as Fisherwoman, a lonely villager in search of companionship when she commissions the Basket Weaver (Peter Dinklage) to craft her a Wicker Husband (SkarsgÄrd).
What results is a man made entirely out of wicker â and one who is ready to please in the sheets. And does so, a lot. So much so that in one scene in the trailer, the two rattle the bed so hard it breaks.
âIt was like a rollercoaster,â SkarsgĂ„rd says. âWeâre anticipating it like, âItâs coming.â So, that was fun.â

Colman adds that when the bed did indeed break, it was âproper full onâ laughter.
Leaning into the humor of those moments, however, made filming the intensely sexual scenes much easier, Colman admits. âItâs less awkward when itâs funny and more like real life, I think,â she says. âRather than doing really serious lovemaking, [that] would be so cripplingly embarrassing.â
As Colman points out, SkarsgÄrd had an added challenge in addition to not breaking out into laughter: doing it all in the wicker costume.

âThose early days was also us figuring out how to deal with this costume I was in because, again, it was all practical. There was no CGI, really. Or very little CGI,â he says, adding that the scenes were, of course, hot but also âliterally hot.â âSo, it was figuring out how to move in it. It was still, again, because it was early days, me discovering what the limitations were.â
Turning to SkarsgĂ„rd, Colman notes that she was impressed by how little he complained, joking that if it were her sheâd be asking to take breaks. â[I was] secretly crying on the mat,â he jokes in response.
The pair star in Wicker alongside Elizabeth Debicki, who plays Fisherwomanâs main antagonist, the Tailorâs Wife, who just canât condone her going against the grain with a manufactured husband, as sheâs trapped in her own unhappy marriage.
Written by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson, the screenplay is adapted from the short story The Wicker Husband.
âIt was incredibly romantic,â SkarsgĂ„rd says of what drew him to the story. âI was really moved by the tenderness, how sweet it was, how funny it was. I was just really impressed by how Al and El ... just navigated it, the whole journey, how I really felt for all these characters. No one was a clichĂ© or a stereotype. Even the antagonist, I sympathized with and understood where she was coming from and felt like she was trapped in this system in a way.â
