Existing WH Bunker Weakens Trump's National Security Argument For His Ballroom: WaPo

President Donald Trump has repeatedly defended the construction of a lavish ballroom on the White House grounds, calling it vital to national security.

In an August Truth Social post, he described the project as a “desperately needed National Security structure” that would provide presidents “a secure space to do their jobs.” Previously, he’s also talked about features that the ballroom will have, including “bomb shelters.”

One issue? A secure bunker like this already exists in the White House complex, according to a Washington Post report, citing anonymous former officials.

That facility, which is located deep underground, is designed to shield the president and his staff during a national security emergency, including a possible nuclear blast, the officials said.

The existence of the bunker undermines the administration’s legal argument for the ballroom, they added.

In a response to The Post, White House spokesperson Davis Ingle maintained that the “East Wing Modernization Project is inextricably tied to the security of the President, the White House grounds and the certain security infrastructure assets.”
