Téa Leoni and Tim Daly met on the set of Madam Secretary in 2014, where they played a couple on-screen

After months of speculation, they confirmed their relationship in December 2014 and got married in July 2025

The couple is now starring in NBC sitcom ‘Newlyweds,’ which premieres on Oct. 23

Years after Téa Leoni and Tim Daly met on the set of Madam Secretary, they’re playing a couple on-screen again.

On Oct. 23, Leoni and Daly’s new NBC sitcom, Newlyweds, premieres, putting the real-life couple in the roles of two people who just got married — not dissimilar to their real lives.

The actors first sparked romance rumors in July 2014 when Leoni was seen in the audience at a play Daly was starring in. She finalized her divorce from her ex-husband, David Duchovny, the following August, after separating three years prior. They were married for 17 years and share two children, Kyd and Madelaine.

In December of that year, PEOPLE confirmed that Leoni and Daly were dating. After over a decade together, the couple married in an intimate ceremony in July 2025.

From meeting on the set of Madam Secretary to supporting each other long after the series finale, here is everything to know about Téa Leoni and Tim Daly’s relationship.

The couple first met as costars on the hit CBS political drama Madam Secretary, which premiered in September 2014. Leoni played the iconic role of Elizabeth McCord, a former CIA analyst who gets called up to the office of the Secretary of State.

Meanwhile, Daly played her husband of two decades, Henry McCord, telling Collider after the show’s premiere that he got along with his on-screen wife “really, really well.”

“She wants to work hard and she wants to have fun,” the Wings alum said. “We have a really good time. I’ve gotten along with plenty of people, but the chemistry sucked. And I’ve hated people where the chemistry is great. It’s much better if you get along and the chemistry is good.”

In a June 2021 interview on the Really Famous with Kara Mayer Robinson podcast, Daly shared what he first thought of Leoni when they met on the set of Madam Secretary.

“I was like, ‘That’s a cool girl.’ Like, she’s a no-bulls---er,” the Private Practice actor said. “She’s here to do this acting work, also. She’s not thinking about her position or anything like that.”

He also assured fans of their show that their real-life relationship is “much better” than their on-screen romance.

They attended the same boarding school

Though they first met on set, Daly told Collider in September 2014 that he and Leoni share a surprising connection: They both attended the same Vermont boarding school, albeit years apart.

The Madam Secretary star said that shared experience shaped their down-to-earth personalities.

“She’s a person, like me and like a lot of people who have gone to that school, including my own daughter, who can be perfectly happy sleeping in a wet sleeping bag on a stone floor, or staying in a fancy hotel,” Daly said. “She’s not a whiner.”

Romance rumors swirled in July 2014 after Leoni attended Daly’s play in Dorset, Vt., over the Fourth of July weekend. PEOPLE later confirmed that Leoni and Daly began dating over the summer.

Leoni and Daly made their red carpet debut in April 2015 at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, attending as guests of journalist Bob Schieffer and former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

“I called Téa and said, ‘How would you like to come?’ ” Schieffer recalled to Bloomberg. “And I said, ‘We’d love to have you bring Tim along.’ ”

The Madam Secretary cast and crew were supportive of their relationship

The Madam Secretary cast and crew had nothing but support for Leoni and Daly’s off-screen romance — even if it came as a surprise.

“Nobody really knew,” their costar Geoffrey Arend told PEOPLE in April 2015. “You don’t want to go to your boss and be like, ‘Hey, so who are you dating?’ So now I think we’re all really protective.”

He added, “Tim’s the best — they’re really good together.”

Series creator Barbara Hall echoed the sentiment, telling Entertainment Weekly in December 2019, “They are the most perfect couple, and it really is a wonderful thing to have been part of. I don’t know if I take credit for it, though!”

Leoni and Daly are both activists

In June 2022, Daly posted a UNICEF video narrated by Leoni, who is a board member, on Instagram, encouraging followers to join them in supporting the organization’s Bridge Fund.

Leoni’s paternal grandmother, Helenka Pantaleoni, co-founded the U.S. committee for UNICEF in 1947, and her late father, Tony Pantaleoni, served on UNICEF’s board and helped create the fund.

“In honor of her father, Téa Leoni’s family will be matching donations made through this campaign,” Daly wrote alongside the caption.

The actor is also president of The Creative Coalition, a nonprofit organization that advocates for social change through the arts.

Daly and Leoni wed on July 12, 2025, in a private ceremony in New York, surrounded by only their immediate family. The nuptials came more than a decade after the couple first got together — but Leoni has been jokingly calling Daly her husband for some time.

“Happy Birthday to the best husband a gal could ever have on TV, @TimmyDaly!” she wrote in a post on X in March 2017. Daly replied, “Thanks Madam Sexytary!”

In the series Newlyweds, Leoni and Daly once again play a couple. Per the show’s logline from NBC, Newlyweds follows “a free-spirited woman and a buttoned-up professor who marry impetuously after a whirlwind courtship.”

“It’s a miracle,” Daly said of acting in another series with his wife during a panel at Universal Studios. “It’s really fun, and it’s cool, and we still like each other.”

Jamie Lee Curtis serves as an executive producer on the series and will appear in a recurring guest star role.
