Jimmy Kimmel called out Donald Trump for making a joke about his death and old age after calling for the late-night host to be fired over a similar remark

Jimmy Kimmel spoke out against Donald Trump for making a joke about his death and old age after the president called for the late-night host to be fired over a similar quip.

On Tuesday, April 28, during the latest episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the host, 58, showed a clip of a speech Trump, 79, gave while welcoming King Charles III and Queen Camilla to the U.S. earlier that day. In the speech, the president discussed the friendship between the U.S. and the U.K. and looked back on how his Scotland-born mother, Mary MacLeod, emigrated at 19 and was married to his father, Fred Trump, for 63 years.

"That's a record we won't be able to match, darling," Trump said as he turned back to his wife, first lady Melania Trump, who was sitting behind him with Camilla. "It's just not going to work out that way," he continued, “We'll do well, but we're not going to do that well.”

The Trumps tied the knot in January 2005 and have been married for 21 years. The president, who turns 80 on June 14, was 58 at the time and would need to live to 121 for the couple to match his parents.

Melania, 56, seemed to smile at the joke, while both royals, who themselves celebrated 21 years of marriage earlier this month, laughed.

"Wait a minute," Kimmel said after showing the clip. "Did he just make a joke about his death? My god, you should be fired for that. Only Donald Trump would demand I be fired for making a joke about his old age, and then a day later, go out and make a joke about his own old age."

Trump's lighthearted remark came a day after he called for ABC to fire Kimmel over jokes in which he described Melania as glowing like an "expectant widow."

The comedian made the jokes on April 23 while delivering a fake roast similar to ones that usually take place during the White House Correspondents' Dinner.

After an active shooter incident disrupted the actual dinner two days later, on April 25, some social media users accused Kimmel of inciting violence toward the president.

Melania then called Kimmel a "coward" on April 27, while Trump described Kimmel's statement as "shocking" in a Truth Social post and called for the comedian to be "immediately fired by Disney and ABC." He added, "I appreciate that so many people are incensed by Kimmel's despicable call to violence, and normally would not be responsive to anything that he said but, this is something far beyond the pale."

Later on Monday, Kimmel defended the remark as a "very light roast joke" referencing Trump's age.

He also expressed sympathy for the couple, who were evacuated after a gunman tried to storm the event, saying that the situation must have been "traumatic and scary" for those involved. He told Melania he was "sorry that you and the president and everyone in that room on Saturday went through that. I really am."

A suspect in the incident has since been charged with attempting to assassinate the president.
