Martha Stewart learned a valuable lesson this year: never wear open-toed shoes while sitting courtside.

The lifestyle mogul attended game one of the 2025 NBA Eastern Conference Finals between the Indiana Pacers and New York Knicks in May. She wore open-toed sandals while sitting close to the action and instantly regretted it after Knicks guard Jalen Brunson "came crashing down" on her.

"I have the Brunson fracture," she told Jimmy Fallon on a recent episode of The Tonight Show. "He stepped on my big toe on this foot."

The accident happened with five minutes left in the game, but the match went into overtime, preventing Stewart from getting up sooner. She said she "immediately" knew her toe was broken. Stewart joked that she could only wear open-toed shoes now that she hurt her foot.

When Brunson fell on her, Stewart said he wasn't sweating and was "cool as a cucumber" despite playing in the high-stakes finals. The Entertaining author said the athlete wasn't aware that he had injured her, but she later discussed the incident with his parents.

"I told his parents," she said. "I met his parents. ... And they were laughing. They thought it was so funny. All I got out of it was a signed basketball for my grandchild."
