Newlyweds is bringing a whole new love story to TV viewers this fall, and the premiere proves that sometimes falling hard and fast is inevitable — at least that’s the case for James (Tim Daly) and Jeanie (Téa Leoni). Warning: Spoilers for the Newlyweds Series Premiere ahead!
In the pilot episode, James and Jeanie meet on a blind date and, despite a rough start, quickly fall into bed together, proving their compatibility. The problem? James is off to work in Oslo, Norway, for a stint at the local university where he’s visiting as a professor. Not wanting to let go of the bond they’re building, the couple decides to make it work through phone calls and even house-sitting.
The introduction of James’s ex-wife Claudia (Jamie Lee Curtis) proves to Jeanie that things are complicated for him, as they are while she raises her mostly grown kids, Poppy (Emma Meisel) and Lolo (Ignacio Diaz-Silverio). Add in the clingy teacher’s assistant Arvid (Bill O’Neill), and you’ve got quite a crew.
“I am the product of 13 marriages — I believe — in my immediate family with my mother, father, and stepfather. There are a lot of interchangeable pieces,” Curtis tells TV Insider. “So, I am used to that idea of people stopping being this person in your life, but then they stay in your life.”

In other words, viewers are going to get used to seeing Jeanie and James juggle the various components of their lives while also moving forward in a marriage they begin planning at the end of the episode.
“Sometimes divorce ends in very binary, separate ideas, and sometimes it just is a messy stew,” Curtis continues. The series co-creator and star adds, “Who knows how long [Claudia will] stay around, but we are having fun, and we have found space for her and I also then get to GTFO and let them do their thing,” she says, pointing to Leoni and Daly, who fans may recall are married in real life.

The question is, who is the biggest nuisance in their new life, Claudia or Arvid? “Arvid’s not a thorn. Arvid is just pure fun and joy and naivete,” Leoni remarks, adding, “And wow! The way that man can move his body is so fun.”

“It’s interesting because I feel like I’m anxious to get to year two [or] year three, because I want to know more about these characters,” Leoni admits. “I want to see also how people grow and change. Poppy and Lolo, they have one idea of this now,” Leoni points out of Jeanie and James’s romance, “but as they get to know James, that’s going to change, and I can imagine that Jeannie and Claudia would have a lot of fun together.”
Only time will tell for certain. In the meantime, check out the full conversation with Curtis, Leoni, and Daly in the video interview above, and let us know what you thought of the Newlyweds premiere in the comments section below.
