Short is mourning the recent death of his daughter, Katherine, and Gomez and Martin decided not to attend the show in solidarity with him

Only Murders in the Building stars Martin Short, Selena Gomez and Steve Martin were absent from the 2026 Actor Awards following Short's recent family tragedy.
Gomez, 33, and Martin, 80, did not attend the show on Sunday, March 1, in solidarity with Short, 75, as he mourns the loss of his daughter Katherine, who died by suicide at the age of 42 on Monday, Feb. 23.
At this year's ceremony, held at the Shrine Expo Hall in Los Angeles, Short was up for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series, which Seth Rogen ultimately took home. The Only Murders in the Building cast is also nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, which went to the cast of The Studio.
“It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short. The Short family is devastated by this loss and asks for privacy at this time,” the Short family previously told PEOPLE in a statement. “Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.”

Katherine was one of three kids Short shared with his late wife, Nancy Dolman, who died of ovarian cancer in 2010. He and Nancy adopted Katherine and her brothers Oliver Patrick, 39, and Henry Hayter, 36.
The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a call from a Hollywood Hills home on the evening of Feb. 23, and the L.A. coroner confirmed to PEOPLE that Katherine had died by suicide.

Only Murders in the Building has been nominated for a total of 11 Actor Awards and has won two since it premiered in 2021.
In 2025, Short won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series, and the cast received the award for Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series.
