Paris Hilton’s planned interview for Kim Kardashian’s authorized biography was canceled 17 times, according to author Jonathan Van Meter. A source close to Hilton is now challenging his description of Kardashian’s reaction.
Van Meter spent five years working on Citizen Kim: The Woman Who Created the Future.
Before Keeping Up With the Kardashians premiered in 2007, Kardashian worked as a stylist and closet organizer for Hilton and appeared on her reality series, The Simple Life.
The dispute over Van Meter’s account comes days before the book’s October 27 release. Viking is publishing the 352-page biography.
Hilton’s Side Disputes the Author’s Account of Kardashian’s Anger
“Kim was so mad when I told her,” Van Meter said in a The Hollywood Reporter interview quoted by PEOPLE on October 23. He had already described the episode in an October 6 interview with CULTURED, recalling Kardashian’s response as “Ugh.”
He interpreted her reaction as an older irritation with Hilton. A source close to Hilton said Kardashian was “absolutely not mad,” TMZ reported on October 23.
An unnamed Hilton source also told PEOPLE that a former assistant at her company had handled the arrangements. The person attributed the scheduling problems to Hilton’s workload and frequent travel, adding that the women remained involved in each other’s upcoming projects.
Van Meter Says He Eventually Gave Up on the Interview
Van Meter told CULTURED that Kardashian contacted Hilton late in his reporting and told him she was willing to participate. Kardashian asked him to coordinate through Hilton’s publicist, an unusual arrangement compared with the introductions she had made to other people in her circle.
He submitted questions in advance and worked with Hilton’s assistant to find a time. Over three or four months, the assistant repeatedly tried to reschedule before Van Meter stopped pursuing the conversation.

He later told The Hollywood Reporter that the cancellations had become more interesting to him than whatever Hilton might have said.
Kardashian Made Time for Hilton’s Music Video
In a 2019 Keeping Up With the Kardashians preview, Kardashian explained to sister Khloé why she had agreed to appear in Hilton’s music video despite her crowded schedule. “She literally gave me a career,” Kardashian said.
The conversation was filmed while she was preparing for the Met Gala and the arrival of her fourth child, Psalm. Her cameo in “Best Friend’s Ass” appeared in the video released that May, before the television preview circulated in August.
The Friends Reunited for a SKIMS Campaign
Hilton joined Kardashian’s October 2020 campaign for SKIMS’ velour collection, modeling tracksuits. As Vogue documented, the pair carried metallic Louis Vuitton handbags and posed in a parking garage, recreating the look of their old paparazzi photographs.
Hilton also attended the opening of Kardashian’s SKIMS flagship store in New York in December 2024. The friends posed together again at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in Beverly Hills on March 2, 2025.
The Book Grew Out of a ‘Vogue’ Profile
Van Meter’s idea for the book followed his 2019 Vogue profile of Kardashian. After she called to say how understood she felt, he told her he would write a book about her someday.
He developed the proposal during the pandemic and began reporting in March 2021. His research included repeated visits to Kardashian’s home and more than 100 hours of interviews across his subjects.
Among those he interviewed were Kris Jenner, Robert Kardashian’s cousin Cici Bussey and Kardashian’s longtime friend Allison Statter. He did not secure interviews with Kanye West or Ray J.
Kardashian read the completed manuscript for fact-checking while changes were still possible, Van Meter told CULTURED. He said she undertook that review diligently.
In an October 20 interview with Forbes, Van Meter said Kardashian had called to tell him the biography would feature across three episodes of an upcoming season of The Kardashians.
