Queen Camilla has become known for breaking the rules during a time the British monarchy went through an immense transition. Ever since King Charles took the throne after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth, he has focused on cutting back spending, choosing not to live in Buckingham Palace, and pushing his son, Prince William, to create a new path for the royal family.
Amid all these changes, Camilla has always been supportive of her husband. She trusts her instincts instead of strictly following protocol. She once admitted that keeping her feet on the ground was her primary goal: “You also have to laugh at yourself because if you can’t, you may as well give up,” she revealed.
“I sometimes think to myself, ‘Who is this woman? It can’t possibly be me,’ and that’s really how you survive.”
Queen Camilla Is Known for Making Her Own Rules and Taking a Stand
Camilla has repeatedly proved that she lives by her own words. According to author Tom Quinn, writing in The Times, she is not afraid to stand up to her royal husband. Before she received her title, she reportedly pushed back and asked Charles, according to The Mirror, “Can’t we get away from all this protocol?” But her honesty isn’t restricted to private moments—she acts just as freely in public.
After Queen Elizabeth’s death in September 2022, Charles immediately assumed duties. At their coronation at Westminster Abbey in May 2023, Camilla Parker Bowles became Queen. While she followed tradition during the ceremony, she rarely sticks to all these centuries-old customs.
Two months after Charles took the throne, Camilla revamped her household. She completely got rid of a role that had existed since medieval times.
While previous queens relied on ladies-in-waiting all day, Camilla changed the title to Queen’s companion in November 2022, making the role informal and less frequent, per reports.

Queen Elizabeth strictly followed royal customs, including the rule that the public should never touch the royal family. Hugs were discouraged, and handshakes had to be brief and initiated by the royal. Queen Camilla, however, listens to her inner voice and welcomes physical contact.

In 2022, she broke protocol by holding hands with a five-year-old boy who dreamed of meeting her and King Charles. Years later, at the National September 11 Memorial in New York, she hugged a woman whose brother had died in the attacks.
According to royal protocol, no one should ever walk ahead of the King. Family members usually walk behind the king or queen based on their place in line to the throne.
Prince Philip, for example, always stayed a few steps behind Queen Elizabeth at public events. Camilla, however, walks alongside Charles whenever she wants.
Her personal style choices have also broken expectations. While critics judged her for wearing a purple dress during the 2022 Commonwealth Day celebration instead of the traditional red, white, or blue, she stuck with her choice.
Later, she arrived at the Badminton Horse Trials in a dark pantsuit, skipping Queen Elizabeth’s preference for skirts and dresses at public events.
