A man convicted in a scam that stole nearly half a million dollars from a Reno-area woman has been sentenced to 35 years in prison.
Amit Bhanwala-Singh will be eligible for parole after 14 years, according to the Washoe County District Attorney’s Office.
Prosecutors said Bhanwala-Singh was previously found guilty of exploitation of an elderly person and attempted obtaining money under false pretenses.
Authorities said he was part of a fraud group that sent a 64-year-old woman a fake Amazon text message before impersonating federal agents investigating her for money laundering.

Over three separate incidents, the woman lost nearly $500,000, prosecutors said.
The case was investigated by the Reno Police Department’s Financial Crimes Unit in a joint operation with the Truckee Police Department and the United States Secret Service.
The sentence was imposed by Washoe District Judge David Hardy.
