After a shock double elimination last week, The Great British Baking Show returned for its fifth episode with a highly competitive Dessert Week, which saw a staggered start for the first time ever.

Hosts Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding announced that the 8 remaining contestants would be making “self-saucing” puddings for the Signature challenge. However, because the dessert is best served hot, the bakers were given staggered start times so that judges Paul Hollywood and Nigella Lawson could taste them as intended.

For the Technical challenge, the contestants were tasked with making bread and butter pudding, while for the Showstopper, each baker had to make a dessert cart featuring at least three classic desserts.

The Signature challenge saw most bakers opting for variations on a chocolate lava cake, while others attempted chocolate fondants and apple crumble puddings. Connie, the 63-year-old NHS Hospital Discharge Lead from London, impressed the most with her chocolate orange fondants and earned a coveted Hollywood handshake.

Things didn’t go so well for Yannis, the 28-year-old Pediatric Doctor from London. He tried to make apple strudel puddings, inspired by his childhood in Austria. However, he made his puddings so big they didn’t bake properly.

Connie continued to impress in the Technical, being one of the handful of contestants to nail the bread and butter pudding. Yannis again finished near the bottom, alongside Moyin and Mo, who were criticized for using too little custard and adding too many extra flavors.

The Showstopper went down well across the board, with each baker delivering a mix of retro desserts. In fact, hairdresser Tom made such an impact with his mojito-inspired pavlova that Lawson asked if she could steal the recipe. But Tom’s cocktail-inspired dessert cart wasn’t enough to take the Star Baker title from Connie, whose trifle went down a storm.

Unfortunately for Yannis, he couldn’t turn things around with his dessert cart, which included sticky toffee pudding, a Black Forrest gateau, and Mary Berry’s Queen of Desserts. In the end, the doctor was eliminated, becoming the fifth contestant to leave the tent.

“Thank you, it has been a pleasure. I grew up watching this programme and being here for five weeks is surreal,” Yannis said before exiting the tent for good. “I will be very proud of that and it’s been absolutely wonderful.”
