Robin Byrd hosted The Robin Byrd Show on New York City's Channel J from 1977 to 1998

Byrd's husband, Shelly, served as an everything man behind the scenes of the public access show, though the couple weren't public about their relationship.

When Byrd had a one-night stand with one of her guests, Shelly even filmed it, she shares in the new documentary Bang My Box: The Robin Byrd Story

Robin Byrd has had the perfect partner by her side during her unique life's journey.

Byrd rose to niche fame as the host of The Robin Byrd Show, which developed a cult following during its airing on New York City's Channel J from 1977 to 1998.

In the new documentary, Bang My Box: The Robin Byrd Story, Byrd, 69, shares more of what her life was like while filming the show, including the love she's shared with her husband Shelly, 84, who served as a fellow producer and “Head Gopher” behind the scenes.

“My audience has this imagination of who I am. I'm their fantasy. I mean, nobody knew we were married. This is probably a complete shock, to know that I've been with him since ‘74. Me, the orgy queen, but he never judged me,” she shared in the documentary.

Byrd recalls meeting Shelly while spending time on Fire Island, reconnecting one day when she was doing a photoshoot in Central Park. He remembered Byrd and it wasn't long before they discovered they “have a lot in common.”

“I was interested in art and he was the artist. He was a hot s–t art director, a creative director. He had his own ad agency but he worked with all these big advertisers — just a big deal. But that didn't attract me to him,” she explained.

“What attracted me to him was the fact that he was so sensitive and warm. He was the woman that I always wanted to marry,” she laughs. “We had sex in places that he would never think about himself, but I was always on top.”

When Byrd learned that she was no longer the long-running guest host of Hot Legs, getting the green light for her own show, Shelly was on board.

“He was there when we signed the contract with Manhattan cable that we were going to be producers. And then, in the studio, he made sure the crew did what they were supposed to do,” she explained.

“We had a cameraman, a sound person who was deaf, a technical director who was colorblind. We called [Shelly] Mr. Head Gopher and that was Shelly — Mr. Head Gopher's job, was to answer the phones and tell them to hold on.”

In the film, the couple returns to Fire Island in celebration of their 50th anniversary, with Byrd sharing gentle reminders of their history there with Shelly, who has dementia. While there are moments he remembers, there are others where he listens intently as Byrd shares their story with him.

“I'm not going to win this one,” she says of the battle with her husband's illness, early in the film. Accepting her future and his, Byrd looks at different options for preserving the more than 600 tapes that document her show, as it unfolded.

The documentary, produced by Sarah Jessica Parker, debuts on HBO on Tuesday, June 30 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT and will be available to stream on HBO Max.
