Kathie Lee Gifford opened up to PEOPLE about her decision to sell her Connecticut home, Cedar Cliff, after 32 years of ownership and renovations

The $100 million waterfront property holds deep sentimental value as the place she raised her two children with her late husband Frank Gifford

She says the home became silent after Frank’s passing and her children moved out to start their own lives

Kathie Lee Gifford is explaining her decision to list her longtime Connecticut home for $100 million.

During an exclusive interview with PEOPLE for this week’s cover story from her primary residence in Nashville, the former talk show host, 72, got candid about why she felt ready to put her sprawling Greenwich property on the market, more than three decades after she purchased the home with her late husband Frank Gifford in 1994.

She admits that because it was the place where she and Frank raised their two children — son Cody, 36, and daughter Cassidy, 32 — it took her family “so long to decide that we were ready” to let it go.

“We tell everybody that, thank God, we don't need to sell it, but we're ready to,” she says of the special place, dubbed Cedar Cliff. “It's going to take obviously, a person who's got a whole lot of money, but I've worked on that house for 32 years. Added on everything, made it the house that it is.”

Kathie Lee notes that the home — which is listed with Leslie McElwreath of Sotheby's International — is absolutely “worth” the hefty price tag. While the stunning property boasts eight bedrooms and nine full bathrooms, she says the home represents much more than just an impressive piece of real estate for her.

“I have my heart and soul, and blood, sweat, and tears in that house. And just memories galore,” she explains. “But once Frank passed and my kids went off to start their own careers and start their own families, the music went out of the house for me.”

She reflects on how the home no longer feels the same as it used to, despite the significant sentimental value it will always hold for her.

“I used to have Neil Sedaka there all the time. Dolly Parton, Larry Gatlin, you name them. Kenny Loggins, Kevin Costner, everybody's playing the piano and playing guitar. And so, it became very silent. My world went silent.”

The star, who has since moved to Tennessee, previously told PEOPLE about what initially captivated her and her late husband when they first saw the property decades ago.

"Frank and I were immediately drawn to the extraordinary and unique Mediterranean beauty of the house on Cedar Cliff. We felt as though we were stepping onto the grounds of a European villa. It was just stunning," said Kathie Lee, who recently finished her 37th book.

The waterfront abode boasts spectacular views of the Long Island Sound, as well as 13,163 square feet of space spread out across 2.9 acres.

She added that she and Frank — who died on Aug. 9, 2015, one week before his 85th birthday — never took the property for granted while they were raising their kids there.

"Frank and I both came from very humble beginnings, and it was almost unbelievable to us that we would have the opportunity to not only live out our married life there together, but also to raise our children in such a magical environment," she said.
